Coworking spaces are essentially shared workspaces.
Coworking: is a business services provision model involving individuals working independently or collaborating across geographies in shared office space.
In Coworking, people assemble in an independent neutral space to work on different projects, or in groups on the same projects. Generally, people in a coworking environment generally aren’t working for the same company.
Co-working: means working in the same shared office space with other employees from the same company.
The difference is quite distinct and Coworking is the term in usage (word with hyphen is neglected and not in use any more).
Before Signing-up for a workspace, consider the following:
Getting the best value for the investment made is crucial:
plans and prices for part versus full-time coworking space
costs that are not included in the membership plan (i.e., locker space, coffee, training, afterhours access, reserved workspace, printing/scanning/copying, mailbox/concierge service, etc.)
consider publishing a calendar of workshops/events
is the membership transferable to any other location (ex: gym membership)
any other community discounts such as reduced cafe pricing, gym membership or public transportation discounts are considerable
currently offering any promotions
procedure to cancel membership (and do you prorate for the part of the month not used)
is there a free trial or reduced rate to try for a day or a week before sign-in
What is the internet speed offered
what’s the conference room/meeting room time does this membership include (during a month)
do you have a membership-board where you can see what other members do and a way to contact them? (Checking for resources within the coworking space before reaching out for assistance outside)
The workplace will not feel like a place of work anymore Working together gets things done.
Being productive in a Coworking space:
There are no set defined rules as such. Here are the best practices as guidelines though:
a) Messaging Services: These services allow free internet-based calling, screen sharing and video conferencing.
Skype/Google Hangouts are great for online meetings/presentations.
b) Meeting Notes: Certain note-taking web-based apps sync with your smart phone/devices.
Evernote allows individual notes to be grouped into larger notebooks and can also be used for storing research notes, web clips and graphics.
c) Events: Workshops and networking events will provide future opportunities.
d) Resource Sharing and Time Management: With no set lunchtime, no dress-code, no regular hours, and no boss behind oneself, self-discipline is most likely going to be the most important soft-skill at a coworking space. Divide and conquer time and tasks is the key and always an essential factor to consider for.
